Australia's egg marketing giant has proposed a new standard for 'free range' egg production which will allow farm stocking densities to increase from the current maximum limit of 1500 birds per hectare to 20,000.
 

In a press release, the Free Range Egg Producers have challenged the notion that caged birds in high density production facilities could be labeled "Free Range".

"More than 3500 consumers have rejected the Australian Egg Corporation's plan to dump standards for free range egg production which will see a slide in quality as well as an increase in health risks and impacts on animal welfare.

Consumers and free range egg farmers have joined forces in an effort to stop the AECL from introducing a system which would classify intensive production systems as 'free range' egg farms.
